If I view http://pdsimg.jpl.nasa.gov/data/vl1_vl2-m-lcs-2-edr-v1.0/vl_0001/a0xx/11a021.blu in Opera (9.2 and 9.5, on Linux) it shows random (changing on refresh) stuff near the bottom after the text, sometimes containing filenames and contents of other tabs and things - does anyone else see the same issue?

I don't, either.

Hixie: looks like new development is still happening around Java applets: http://gemal.dk/blog/2008/02/24/mozilla_3_get_a_new_java_plugin/
18:41
<webben_>
Well, it's hardly like Java applets have disappeared over the new developments map.
18:41
<webben_>
e.g. Cortado video player

<hsivonen>
webben_: the point I'm trying to make is that HTML5 should have <applet>
18:48
<webben_>
hsivonen: I don't particularly disagree with that (makes as much sense as keeping embed for Flash at any rate), but I think the argument you'd need to make (at least as far as Hixie is concerned) is that you couldn't use OBJECT for that.
18:49
<webben_>
the point is less are Java applets still used than do they need APPLET.
18:52
<hsivonen>
webben_: good point
18:54
<webben_>
(FWIW, data point of one and all that, I had a lot of trouble trying to migrate some legacy content from APPLET to OBJECT, it appeared to work but actually seemed to result to flakiness. That doesn't mean it was necessarily impossible, but it wasn't obvious how to fix it.)
19:03
<hsivonen>
webben_: I sent email to the HTML WG
19:04
<webben_>
cool

<hsivonen>
hmm. I forgot to refer to http://lists.whatwg.org/htdig.cgi/whatwg-whatwg.org/2007-April/010789.html in my message

<webben_>
"including how fallback content works when java support isn't present and the alt attribute is present. (As in, does alt get used over fallback content or the other way around or somewhere in between." from the message is important. IIRC browsers seem to handle that very differently.
19:09
<webben_>
of course, that could be specified in the compatibility section without including it in the recommended-to-authors core.

jgraham_: my only plan for May outwith of school is to go to my grandmother's memorial service (in Cam)
19:23
<gsnedders>
jgraham_: so I really don't have many plans either :)
19:24
<jgraham_>
gsnedders: Yeah, I'll make sure to keep those dates free
21:11
<annevk>
we have some open bugs on fallback handling for <applet>
21:11
<annevk>
i think we decided on dropping alt= support in favor of fallback
