hey people, i've got a question regarding properly marking up some data, is this the right place to ask or is there somewhere else more suitable for newb questions?
00:56
<MikeSmith>
IRC-Source_48908: best just to ask
00:57
<IRC-Source_48908>
i need to mark this up http://imgur.com/a/1ooJS , but the data is arranged in columns, should I use tables to represent this or something like divs?
01:03
<MikeSmith>
IRC-Source_48908: it looks exactly like tabular data, so it would seem best to mark it up using a <table>
01:08
<IRC-Source_48908>
yea, that's what i thought, as i was marking it up it didn't feel right, the data is only meaningful when you look at it from a column perspective, the rows are meaningless

<IRC-Source_48908>
or perhaps i should markup each day as it's own table, that would then make sense

<Domenic>
Hmm the UTF-16 encoder is not specified in encoding.spec.whatwg.org?
03:46
<Domenic>
Someone is claiming that you need to prepend a BOM (in a Node.js issue https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/11767 ) and that seems wrong but I'm not sure where to confirm...
06:00
<annevk>
Domenic: we removed it since browsers don't need to expose it
10:13
<XhmikosR>
MikeSmith: no worries, it's not so urgent :)

<annevk>
I wonder why trac.webkit.org is offline for so long
11:08
<annevk>
I guess it's mostly managed by Apple?
11:11
<hsivonen>
what's the motivation for user-select: none; to exist in the Web Platform?
11:11
<hsivonen>
it allows hostile behavior by sites
11:53
<gsnedders>
hsivonen: there are plenty of cases of mouse/touch based navigation where you want to forbid selections, though maybe you can do that decently enough with JS alone, idk
13:21
<hsivonen>
gsnedders: does specifying it on <a> make following links faster in iOS Safari or something?
13:23
<zcorpan_>
hsivonen: i think it is a UI expectation to not allow selection of text in buttons
13:25
<zcorpan_>
e.g. https://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/layout/style/res/forms.css has a bunch of -moz-user-select: none;
13:53
<gsnedders>
hsivonen: I think Google Maps uses it a fair bit, for example
15:27
<topaxi>
its also useful for drag&select style things (like file explorers or desktops)
15:27
<topaxi>
oh i'm very late
15:27
<topaxi>
... :D

<mounir>
dbaron: any chance you can have a look at https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/pull/994 ? :)
22:20
<dbaron>
mounir: done

<mounir>
dbaron: thanks :)
